about

Marches to Infinity

Old school 8bit tech and cheesy hissy cassette sound quality to boot.
Recorded summer - fall 1988

Roland JX-3P
Ensoniq Mirage Sampler
Atari 512 computer with Dr.T's Sequencer
Some old midi router with synch to tape

Most are shitty straight one takes to cassette
some are shitty multi track (8-Track) then from cassette

These are all unfinished ideas that never made it past these 'proof of concept' type of recordings and have only survived as (and were sourced here from) second generation cassette copies. There were a bunch of ideas being played with at this time that eventually came out in other ways.

Why release this? Why not. This work is obviously derived from more commercial folks. I prefer not to release things that are blatantly similar to others. So from the view of having all my work on this platform it makes sense to have this included as a breakaway from Maybe Mental and a bridge to the first incarnation of Life Garden. For me this was an important phase to work to leading to LG but not one to stick with for too long...

This project was specifically created as a simple lullaby like collection of children songs for my soon to be born son. Musically there were some 'Cluster' related albums in the late 70's that struck me as simple child like songs. Simple in a good way here. I have also long been a Phillip Glass and Steve Reich fan and material like Glass's "North Star' was an influence as well, along with a billion others... Conceptually I was years deep into all kinds of cosmic nonsense and was then inspired by notions of healing music, intelligence activating music, magick, ritual and such. There was a scientist back then (Dr Susumu Ohno) getting some notice by translating cell information into music that in his interpretation became Baroque dances of sorts. The last concept involved here was that these could be sketches for group/band of a more rock style. So all the above congealed into one overall approach to the structure and sounds here.

These were not pursued further because of the realities of becoming a parent and the lack of a connection to people that night be willing to put the time needed to actually play this stuff. They also did not represent a real creative direction that I felt compelled to pursue beyond the joy of exploring what was still new technology for me at the time.

In hind sight this project was similar to Beefheart's banging on a piano composition style. In my case I was banging notes into sequencer that could play what I was incapable of doing in reaL time.

Punk and Outsider movement he began experimenting with home-made ‘found’ instruments, electronics and tape manipulation techniques in search of the occult side of sound and the pure joy of creating sonic paintings ... more
